Sertürner isolated it in 1804 — the first alkaloid ever purified from a plant, and the moment 'the active ingredient' became a thing you could hold.
This star is on the map because the show intends to take the question apart properly — the trials, how it is actually tested, whether the thing sold is the thing studied.
